Major upgrade lined up for Five Lamps junction

A major upgrade will be coming to the Five Lamps junction and Duffield Road in September.

The 17-week long scheme will deliver improved traffic signals, refurbish historic railings, and see Duffield Road resurfaced as part of the capital infrastructure programme between Five Lamps and St Alkmunds Way.

These improvements combine three separate projects to minimise disruption. The Council has factored in the feedback from the recent Duffield Road bus lane consultation which was against a new bus lane.

Instead, these new proposals will deliver improved bus efficiency by upgrading the signals along the route.

In addition to the junction improvements, we are committed to maintaining our heritage assets. As part of this wider scheme, we will be refurbishing the much-loved Victorian railings on Duffield Road.

During the works, a number of road closures will be in place at various points until December 2025.

  • Phase 1 will see the outbound leg of Kedleston Road and the right turn on to Duffield Road closed for five weeks from 1 September to 3 October. The diversion will be via Duffield Road, Broadway, and Kedleston Road.

  • For 9 weeks from 6 October to 5 December 2025, the outbound leg of Duffield Road and the inbound leg of Kedleston Road will be closed. The diversion route will be Kedleston Road, Broadway, and Duffield Road, with a one way system in place.

  • The final closure will see the right turn from Garden Street to Duffield Road closed, while all inbound and outbound movements will be maintained. This will be in place from 5 December to 19 December.

The dates of these road closures are subject to change as the project progresses. Throughout the process, a route will be in place for pedestrians, with temporary crossings provided. There will also be temporary signals at the junction of Broadway and Kedleston Road.

These works are funded by the Bus Service Improvement Plan funding, with additional support from the East Midlands Combined County Authority.
