Blue Plaques

Blue Plaques commemorating the lives of the great and the good are now a common feature in many of our towns and cities.  Six Streets History have decided to take a slightly different angle on the “Great and the Good” emphasis of these plaques.

In a pop-up exhibition as part of the 2024 Arts Trail we are celebrating people in our neighbourhood who led ordinary lives.  Perhaps they were well known in our neighbourhood in the past, or had an unusual job, or contributed in a less than conventional way to community life.

A group of volunteers have selected local residents listed in the 1911 and 1921 census as well as the 1939 Register that was prepared right at the beginning of World War 2. In addition, we have been approached by local residents asking us to feature a remarkable person whom they can remember.

Look out for the blue plaques that will appear around the time of the weekend of 22 and 23 June. They will be displayed in windows or will be attached to walls and gates all over the Six Streets. All will be visible from the pavement.

Members of the history group will be on hand to explain our project over the weekend. If you miss Blue Plaque details, information will be available on the History section of the Six Streets website after the Arts Trail weekend.
