Walking Together

Next walk Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026 - Willington Lakes

This is a 4 mile walk through Willington Lakes Nature Reserve and back to Willington along the Trent and Mersey Canal towpath. The walk is level but can be a bit muddy after rain. There are gates and several bird hides which are well worth going into with binoculars if you have them.

A herd of young cattle were present when it was pre-walked, they were curious in one field but were well behaved.

As usual we will meet from 10.20 for 10.35 departure outside 75 Wheeldon Avenue.  Well behaved dogs on a lead always welcome!

Feel free to bring a drink/snack with you, but there are cafes or pubs in Willington for refreshments after the walk.

Walking Together is aimed at helping people to get to know each other better by spending some time in nearby countryside (we're lucky to have such a wide range in easy reach) and maybe in a teashop or pub as well.

Car Sharing has also helped people to be more friendly as well as saving the environment and any parking costs.

January 2025 Walk
Ambergate

This circular walk will start at Ambergate and take us in and around Shining Cliff Woods. Distance is between 4-5 miles. The terrain is paths defined by tree roots. It's a beautiful area and provides so much to discover. We will find a fallen tree half way round to sit and enjoy whatever food & drinks we've taken with us. Don't forget a pad or plastic bag to sit on to keep our bottoms dry🤩. Car share will be available on first come, first served basis so prior notification will be helpful. Well behaved dogs on a lead always welcome🐕. You will need warm waterproof clothing and footwear (it will be muddy). Looking forward to seeing you all. Summaries…

October Walk 2024 summary:

We had a lovely but unexpected wet walk on Sunday, 30th October but the best thing was we all laughed about it. We encountered a rainbow, then thunder (in that order…!!!) and then the sun shone from a beautiful blue sky for the last hour of our walk. On arrival at our meeting point we had to work together to achieve creative parking so we could all fit into the car park – this is where our daily street parking came in handy! We were surrounded by breathtaking views from the outset.

We walked or more likely, clambered up to Birchen Edge where we felt we were on top of the world. We encountered many seasoned rock climbers (rather them than me…) and the Nelson and Wellington Monuments. It was at the latter that the sky emptied itself on us and unfortunately there was not a tree with a leaf remaining for us to shelter under. We quickly re-packed our sandwiches and huddled together against the largest tree trunk we could find. The rain lasted all of 10 minutes and then the sky just got higher and brighter.

Our walk then took us along some stunning walkways with amazing views and scenery all around us. All in all, it was a beautiful walk and we felt the tea and cake in The Robin Hood at the finish was well justified.
